Op Shield

Post by Flyco »

Geoff, I saw your post about the T/O time for the A-10s on this mission.

I had put together an initial plan, and agree with your comments. I have attached it for your information. Not sure about he armament, and the fuel could be dropped a bit further.

I will leave you to put the final mission together for Paul to take a look at. Please feel free to use my input or not as you see fit.

Flyco,
Here is my miz for 1st Feb. My ideas were very similar to yourself. I made a couple of changes to my recovery. Basically, my departure and recovery is now your plan.
I've altered WPs in the target area. We have three convoys. Two to the West, and one to the East, all moving south.
My strategy is to split the formation at Fence In, into 2 groups
We now have 3*TOTs for 0646hrs on the West and East roads. Hence the formation split.
The West road has 2 convoys, namely "A" and "B".
Convoy "A" leads "B". "A" is made up of 5*T55's, with a ZSU at the rear. Convoy B" consists of 7 Ural trucks with a ZSU in the lead.
The East road has a single convoy, called "C". It comprises 6*BMP1's with a ZSU at the rear.
All targets will be a challenge because of the narrow roads and all the trees.
I think it best to allow each of us to rearm as required. I removed my laser rockets and added unguided. My setup will also include CBU97s, CBU105, 4 Mav Ds with my pod on the left wing.
My route will be higher, at 5000ft. It's important we destroy the three ZSUs, before we even consider the other targets.

Paul,
If you and Flyco are happy with my outline miz, I'll polish it up, add more aircraft, and send to Boos. My plan will be to finish the brief late Sunday

All,
I've assumed that my miz is acceptable, so started work on the brief. I'll send my miz to Boos late Sunday.

If you intend to fly, please let me know so I can allocate aircraft slots early.

We have three convoys to destroy. I plan to carry out a synchronized attack on all 3 convoys at our TOT of 2046Z.

If I can allocate slots early, it will give you time to practice an attack on your nominated convoy. They will all be a challenge because of the trees, contours, and state of the road.

No major problems with your plan Geoff.

Just 3 minor niggles:

You have 2 WPs named "CROSS Rd", it would reduce possible confusion by re-naming one.

You have omitted AIMs on one ac - I know you sometimes like to leave them off to reduce wt. However, they are not that heavy and I would prefer to fly with them on - just in case.

You have gone for dumb rockets as opposed to APKW. Again the weight difference is not significant, but APKW do allow better stand-off (~5nm) for attacks on AAA etc. They are more expensive, but I would not be paying!

I plan to fly on Tuesday.

All,
Here is the miz for Tuesday. I believe it ready for onward transmission to Boos. I hope to finish the brief tomorrow, Sunday

Flight Line Up and Primary Targets are:-

Boar 1-1 Geoff ZSU-B 2046 WP 7
Boar 1-2 Richard ZSU-C 2046 WP 9
Boar 1-3 Paul ZSU-A 2046 WP 6
Boar 1-4 Alan ZSU-A 2046 WP 6

Boar 1-1, 1-2, & 1-3 will have TOTs of 2046Z on their ZSUs.

Feel free to test the miz out. Check the SA-11 has been deleted, so you can get to your ZSUs. The convoys are a challenge, especially ZSU-A, WP6. After my tests, I believe 9000ft is best for the ZSUs.

I intend to send the miz to Boos, early Sunday.

Below is an image of the target area.
