Op Persian Storm One - 29 Mar 22
Re: Op Persian Storm One - 29 Mar 22
All,
See below, for 97Sqn brief and test miz for Op Persian Storm.
I have assumed 5 pilots. For the test miz, I've deleted the SA6.
Falcon, Richard, If you test it out, I suggest you try against WP6(SA15 E1) and WP7(SA15 E2)
Paul, Flyco, try your skills against WP12(SA15 W1)
I could have made the brief a lot simpler, if we operated at 22,000ft.

Richard,
Not as exciting as Alan's night low level 2 weeks ago.

Filip,
That's good news. You will be Pontiac 1-2, as shown in the brief.

Why aren't we flying it at 21,000 ft, and using a GBU. Using 2 Mavs should work, but if it doesn't you are spending a lot of time and weapons setting up for a second run.
Incidentally, I didn't plan the night LL approach cos it was fun (although I am glad you enjoyed it) - it was just the best option. In this case, I think a high level GBU is the right option, and with multiple targets it is quicker.
I also prefer Mav-Ds.

Flyco,
I agree that flying at 21000ft, will be safer, and quicker. I just thought that after your sortie, this would be more of a challenge, below cloud. I've tested it at +20K, and the cloud cover is not an issue.
I've made my decision. We will transit to the target area at 21000ft, and destroy all the SA-15, Shilka, and ZSU from this height. When safe to descend, we will then engage the F-4E, Heli, and runway from below 8500ft. Join up at WP20 will still be at 5000ft, with 500ft separation.
I'll modify the miz to suit. Subtle changes will be made to the brief. No need to orbit now at the IPs for separation.
Duke will get the miz before 2100hrs today. The new brief will be posted late Saturday.

Geoff, just to let you know, I have flown the current mission as No 5, at 21,000 ft. It worked well; my first pickle on WP-12 was Roll + 29 minutes - a hit. I also dropped a single CBU-105 on the 4 F-4s and destroyed all of them.
If you need any more data let me know. You were correct, it is bloody boring at 21,000 ft without any red air around.
That said, with 5 A-10s going round in short pattern runs over the same area, all at 21,000 ft, it is probably going to be a bit exciting, albeit not in a nice way.

If the barcap doesn't hold back all the QRA it will get very exciting/deadly for you guys...... but that's not generally the idea of barcap
