Op Protocol

Post by Flyco »

This is my latest iteration for Op Protocol, although I am still not happy with it.

The intention is the locate and make runs against the targets from the IP, leaving the static Tanks until last. However, at the around 1000 ft agl and nose on t the AFVs we are vulnerable to cannon fire - hence the 2.5nm cut-off.

We should have time to swop some weapons before departure if anyone wants, and the load out I have chosen is a bit arbitrary. I am still uncertain whether to go for 6 Mavs - the rockets are not that effective, and dropping GBU-12s is made difficult due to cloud. It may be that we should wait for them to halt - get a good co-ordinate fix and drop from above cloud.

Paul please feel free to amend as you see fit. In the meantime I will try a few alternatives.

OK, I think that I have a working solution for this mission, using the above set-up. If all 4 ac fly, we are probably going to be a bit heavy on ordnance, but we can offload some of the ordnance if we get a full house. I have also decided to keep a common Laser code, to allow buddy lasing where necessary.

The plan is to fly as 2 pairs, but we will have to keep our eyes open for each other. I will draw up an outline brief over the weekend.

Paul, if you have flown the profile, and it works for you, submit it for use in the protocol mission.

I will get on with drawing up the A-10C Flt Brief.

Paul, I have been flying the mission, and have a few changes to suggest. They are mainly a reorganisation of the weapons, and so can be completed in 2-3 minutes, while we are waiting to taxi, so there will be no need to amend the mission.

Basically, I had problems getting a good fix with the GBUs before climbing above cloud to drop blind. Additionally, the manually aimed cannon on the red vehicles had no problems spotting me as I flew overhead above cloud! In addition, if we lost then’ wrong’ aircraft we could be embarrassed for not having all the options covered.

I suggest getting rid of all the GBUs, the CBU and 40% of the APKWs, and putting 3 Mavs and extra JDAMs on. The aircraft will also be lighter and we should be able to take out the vast majority of the targets, including many at a safer range.

I will finish it off and let you have a copy by tomorrow evening. If you don’t like it we can stick with the original plan, or let people choose what they would prefer.

Paul, attached are the briefs for the 2 options: One using Mav, one without. As I say I favour the Mav version. It should only take a few minutes to alter the load at start-up.
