Server hardware

Post by Neil Willis »

This is a short appeal to anyone out there who has a spare mobo, CPU, 16Gb (or more) of memory, and a good PSU after an update to something better for their own rig. Anything from the last generation of gear will be fine. If you have some or all of those components that are just gathering dust and staking up space, would you be prepared to give them a new home?

We are going to set up an independent server, working from my home, as I have good internet, and am here to be able to support it fully. To that end, I need to beef up an old PC I have here to use as the server. At present, it has too little memory, and a pretty old mobo and it is need of some love.

I am happy to foot the day to day running costs of the said server, but I could do with some help hardware wise.

Thanks.

I might have 16GB of DDR4 that I replaced for a matched 32GB having only used it for a couple of weeks. I'll take a look and see if I can find it and if I still have it, you are welcome to it.

I'd be happy to chip in some cash if needed for parts.

Also have this in the loft if anything can be used.

Thanks guys. We want to avoid spending any hard earned if we can help it. We have some funds in the kitty too, but if we can get hold of enough cast off stuff we can build a suitable machine. All-out power isn't an issue without the need for the GUI side of things, so previous gen stuff will be perfect.

If you can dig out that memory Pongo, that would be excellent.

I've just had a quick look in the usual places, but we had a load of decorating done recently so things are a little "upset" shall we say. I'll have a proper look later on. I know i didn't get rid of it. It could be in the garage. When I find it, I'll let you know and you can pm me an address to send it to.

That would be very useful, thanks Scooby.

We can have a couple of drives available that way.
