Hi all,
thought this might be useful to some people who aren't sure where to start with realistic enemy group numbers, so below I've listed types of armoured units I would expect to see on a battlefield from a tank commanders point if view and what we use as the known Russian standard formations and what they consist of
Standard Recce screen
2x BRDM2
2x BMP 2
The purpose of the Recce screen is to provide timely and accurate intelligence to the rest of the battle group (usually 2-5Km behind the Recce screen) and to identify likely routes of advance.
Combat Recce Patrol
1x T-series tank
2/3 BMP 2
1x Armoured engineer vehicle (for DCS a MTBL would work well)
1x BRDM2
The combat recce patrol (CRP) are the enemy’s lead troop/platoon sized formation tasked with establishing the Axis the whole formation will use to advance across the battlefield.
Combat Security Outpost (CSOP) –
1x T-series tank in a dug in or cammed up position
2/3x BMP2
Up to 30x dismounts with support weapons up to and including GMG (grenade machine gun)
A CSOP is essentially a Combat Recce Patrol but in a defensive location usually one CSOP every 1 or 2 grid squares to create a blocking position on friendly advance of lead friendly callsigns and also provide an early warning to the main enemy formation of the advancing force.
Tactical Manoeuvre Group –
10x T-series tanks
4x BMP (1,2 or 3 dependant on the brigade)
2x AD (usually ZSU-23 or SA19….These are the forward elements of the air defence web covering that particular AO further back you would find the air defence missile locations …..to us at RAF Air UK more detailed SAM locations )
2x BTR variants
2x BRDM2
A Tactical manoeuvre group (commonly known as the Vanguard) is basically a small battlegroup type size formation designed to push forward and exploit the advance, the AD units would be found at the rear in cover providing air defence to the formation. The BDRM’s would sit on the extremities of the grouping providing ATGM support and therefore creating a ATGM net in conjunction with the T series ATGM gun launchers.
Artillery Battery composition
FOO - (Tracked Vehicle MTLB or similar) The FOO is the forward observer that usually calls for the artillery…usually embedded with more substantial armoured units i.e a Tactical manoeuvre group.
Battery control section –
1x MTLB or similar
1x Either a Ural-4320/Kamaz 4350 as a stores vehicle for the support of the battery
Guns Platoon –
3x 2S19 Msta-s 152mm SPG – two gun platoons would be used in tandem from one location giving you 6x Msta-2 at a given site

Nice one, that's easy to make some more realistic templates.
