Re: We seem to be getting bigger
Surely it would be better to have one a/a squadron and one a/g and have the a/a guys provide cover for the a/g guys?

ok so i fully understand the concept of 2 separate squads AA n AG however in my dim mind it would lead to either one or the other being weaken. so for examle Alein is good at AA and AG if he choses to go AA then it leaves AG with one less experanced damed good pilot .Alien wrote: ↑19 Apr 2020, 15:20Father Cool wrote: ↑19 Apr 2020, 13:46Surely it would be better to have one a/a squadron and one a/g and have the a/a guys provide cover for the a/g guys?

Re: We seem to be getting bigger
Yes but what I'm saying is for any given mission the aircraft needs to be set up for what it will be doing. The F14 can take sidewinders and a phoenix if going for tunnel only air to ground munitions with a lantirn pod which means it has limited air to air capability but can still do it to a degree. If fully kitted out with unguided munitions as well then its only got sidewinders to play with.
I am just questioning in what situation can a squadron go out clear the air defences then have time to go back re arm with air to ground and not have any resistance going back in the bombs?
If doing a proper bombing sortie and air to air resistance is expected then it makes sense for a fighter sweep of Vultures to go in just ahead of the bombcats, clear the air and then the bombcats can go in before the enemy can mobilize a second group.
I agree that putting out 2 flights will weaken each but its unavoidable in a dual role mission profile, but we have good pilots for both. We just need to decide who is stronger in what role.
Myself, Alien and Scooby are probably the most capable in a dual role currently but Scooby's a/a prowess probably puts him in Vultures (I did bag 5 last week mind ). Once we have all had more practice bombing I'm sure that will change. If we are to go for bombing points as things stand then I would have to claim myself and Alien for the Bombcats as givens.
Just my thoughts.

We have 3 flights and a floater, in a situation like this, 2 flights run a/a escort for 1 flight of strike bombcats. A single flight of bombcats can carry a hell of lot of buckets of instant sunshine and do some serious mischief.
Now that is in an ideal situation where all pilots are on the mission, but it is a fluid and changeable scenario. So long as everybody has an idea of bombing and a/a, flight taskings can be assigned based on who is on the mission.
