For those who had either forgotten (like myself), or are new to the Harrier, be aware that it has the unique capability to display a FLIR image on the HUD.
To enable:
- Turn on the DMT (it's a flip switch, just to the right of the INS knob on the lower front main panel)
- Turn on the power to the FLIR (it's a flip switch just above the INS knob)
- Turn the display to "night" mode (it's a flip switch on the recessed panel just under the UFC)
- Hit sensor select AFT
Whilst it only displays on the HUD (thus being much more limited than the NVG with regards to versatility), IMO it has some very useful applications:
1. It can "see" further than NVGs in the dark. So for example, I use mine at night to spot my carrier from a longer range and fly my final turn and inbound leg using the FLIR, then switch to NVG when I've come alongside the ship for the hover landing
2. In both not only night conditions, but even daylight, I've found that it helps pickout other aircraft, whether that is your tanker, wingman or bogeys.
In short, if you're not already using it, I highly recommend that you learn it. It's surprisingly easy to use and very much adds another string to our bow.

Re: Using the FLIR
Don't know what I'm doing wrong, but I can't get it to display. Checked all my switches, they're correct, Sensor switch Aft is working.
Just not displaying in my HUD. I take it, it works during Daylight hours?

Yes, it works in daylight, but can only be seen as a light shimmering.
