BMS F16 START UP CHECK LIST

1) Prepare For ‘Back-Up’ (Radio) Check:
- Flash light on (situational).
- Close Canopy.
- Elec Power, Battery to max.
- Backup radio, Com1 volume, Com2 Volume, set backup radio mode to ‘BOTH’ and the pre-set channel to ‘01’.
- Set internal lighting to suit.

2) After For ‘Back-Up’ (Radio) Check:
- Set ‘MSL’ and ‘THREAT’ volume to max.
- Set backup radio pre set channel to ‘06’.
- Move the C&I knob from to ‘UFC’.

3) Prepare Aircraft For Engine Start:
- Set external lighting panel per SOPs.
- On the fuel panel set the engine feed source to ‘NORM’.
- On the air con panel, set the air source to ‘NORM’.
- On the oxygen regulator panel, turn on oxygen flow.
- Set alignment knob to ‘NORM’ [left click or mouse wheel ‘away’].
- Set all avionics switches on.
- Set all hard-points and sensors on via the sensor panel.
- Turn on parking brake.

4) Start Engine:
- Turn on the Jet Fuel by setting the switch to ‘JET2’ [right click].
- Wait for engine thrust RPM to reach the green notch indicating 25% engine RPM.
- Move throttle unit out of detente.
- Monitor FTIT (above 750=possible ‘hot start’ see troubleshooting) and wait for RPM to settle at 71%.

5) Turn On Remaining Aircraft Systems:
- Set IFF to ‘NORM’.
- Turn ILS on.
- Set Stores Config to CATI or CATIII per load-out.
- Set HMCS brightness.
- Set HUD brightness.

6) Prepare Mission Systems & Avionics:
- Load DTE (via right MFD).
- Move FCR out of ‘Standby’ mode and into ‘CRM’.
- Set BINGO (as required).
- TCN Yardstick (as required).
- Set ToT/Caret (as required).
- Set Laser codes and auto lase (as required).
- Set IDM/data link stations to monitor (as required).
- Set A-G payload (as required).
- When indicated by flashing alignment notifications (HUD & DED INS page) move alignment knob to ‘NAV’ [left click or mouse wheel ‘away’].
- Set data-link broadcast setting (as briefed, normally ‘DMD’).
- Set altimeter (as required).
- Set HSI for course and HDG (as required). [Set course to the runway heading and the HDG bug to the wind direction].
- Check data-link is broadcasting (only if D/L is set to ‘DMD’).

7) Prepare To Taxi:
- Set AVTR (ACMI recorder) (as desired).
- Arm ejection seat.
- Check PFL panel for faults and ‘F-ACK’ any BIT faults, ensure master caution light is clear.
- Visor down [Left Alt+V].
- Check NWS steering is on.
- Set Taxi Lighting to ‘ON’ [may appear as being in the ‘OFF’ position, check you can see taxi lights on tarmac ahead].
- Call “[seat number] ready to taxi”.
- If not directed, pull EPU pin [‘T 1’] & pull chocks [‘T 2’].
- Apply toe brakes and release parking brake [depending on aircraft type and load-out, you can roll on idle thrust].
- Set DED to the INS page to view ground speed.

8) Taxi:
- Roll slowly forward, test toe brakes.
- Roll slowly forward (less than 5knts), test rudder/nose wheel steering input.
- Roll forward at slow to medium pace (10-15knts) and test toe brakes.
- Proceed to EOR and take-off via SOP.

9) Troubleshooting:
- What if you do not succeed in starting the engine after JFS discharge? See BMS manual ‘-1 The aircraft’ page 117.
“you have the option to ask your crew chief to manually recharge the accumulator. This option is available through the ground page of the ATC menu (you must be on the ground frequency). Recharging the JFS will take about 3 minutes, during which a status message is displayed in the top right corner of the screen. Once the message disappears you can give START 2 another try”.

- ‘Hot Start’: See BMS manual ‘-1 The aircraft’ page 207.
“BMS 4.34 introduced the possibility of engine start failure due to pilot error. Advancing the throttle to IDLE before the JFS has spun the engine up to 20% RPM may cause a HOT START with FTIT rising very quickly above the 800°C (PW) or 935° (GE) ground limits.

During engine start the pilot must wait for engine RPM to reach 20% before moving the throttle to IDLE, then closely monitor FTIT temperature. If the needle starts to move quickly to 750°C and above a hot start is occurring and the engine must be immediately shut down. Failure to interrupt the engine start will damage the engine, leading to engine fire with FTIT rising to well over 1000°C.

After moving the throttle back to the CUTOFF position (click idle detent if necessary) keep the JFS running as it helps to cool down the engine. Allow FTIT to fall to 200°C before advancing the throttle to IDLE to attempt another engine start.
In addition, there is a small, random chance that even with no pilot error a HOT START could develop. It is now mandatory to closely monitor FTIT during engine start and intervene if necessary.

- ‘JFS overheat’: See BMS manual ‘-1 The aircraft’ page 207.
“After 4 minutes running (on the ground) the JFS will start to overheat (JFS light will flash once per second). After 8 minutes running (on the ground) the JFS will fail (light flashes twice per second) and you will no longer be able to start the engine. To avoid this you should shut down the JFS if necessary to let it cool (the lamp will stop flashing when it has cooled sufficiently), before asking your crew chief to spend 3 minutes recharging it (ATC > Ground menu page)”.
