BMS Do's & Dont's

Post by Sharpe »

All,
This is a short list (to be updated as we go) that identifies critical do's an don'ts to be adhered to when hosting/joining/flying BMS.

These items should be treated as SOPs and will be incorporated into the SOP document in due course. Please can I ask all pilots to read this carefully and acknowledge that they have read it by posting below.

DO:
- Run the game in windowed mode (if you need help with this, speak with Maggsy/Muff).
- Ensure IVC has been set as an exception to any and all anti-virus systems (not just your primary AV app). This includes (for example): AVG, Windows Defender and Malware Bytes where AVG is your primary.
- Minimise all windows not linked to BMS (including TS, but not including, for example, Voice Attack or Helios).
- Check your game/config is working correctly before joining TS for a mission (but do shut your sim down fully before joining the online game/comms chat etc - see further notes below).
- Ensure Track IR is 'on' before opening the games splash screen.
- Ensure the correct default microphones have been set for IVC before joining into the chat lobby (looking for a more permanent fix but this is windows related).
- Ensure if you have been flying/using BMS, that you fully exit to desktop and close down all instances of BMS/IVC before re-joining.
- Run BMS as admin (not critical if you forget, but useful if you can remember or have an ‘auto loader’ app).
- Set up appropriate ports and router DMZs if you plan to host a flight.

DO NOT:
- Run the game in full screen mode.
- Alt tab in/out of the game (comms lobby, 2d screen, 3d screen). You should not need to do this in 2d mode when running in windowed mode.
- Open the IVC client or server client (if you are joining a game BMS does all this for you).
- Leave the sim unless you are directed to do so by your flight lead (who will in turn ask the host). This includes if you have been shot down.
- Go in and out of either IVC, the 2d map or IVC without fully quitting to desktop first (and shutting all BMS related software down before re-committing).
- Run any apps or windows (including, for exmaple, Chrome/IE or media software) that is not directly supporting your BMS game (e.g., voice attack or helios).
- Run BMS with your AV off unless you have confirmed that your AV cannot accept the IVC exception (should only happen in rare cases). If you do have to run with your AV off, turn off ALL AV and firewalls (including win defender) are off.
- Re-join a mission unless you are cleared to do so by your flight lead (who will in turn check it with the host). Note that each game will allow a maximum of 2 're-joins' to the 3d screen on the tarmac before either the game is restarted for all or the pilot(s) stuggling to get in will have to knock it off.

NOTE:
- BMS is sensitive to packet loss and line latency. This will have a bigger impact in Dynamic Campaigns than in TE’s. There is not much (in the short term) that can be done about this but if you know you have a weak line please be aware that this can cause stability issues.
- Ideally, you should have 20000 down and 10000 up in your server phone book. Appreciate there may not be much you can do about this, but note if your line is not up to this standard (C.20Mb down / 10Mb up) then you may struggle with your games connection, particularly in Dynamic Campaigns.
- Until further notice, rejoining the server mid flight will not typically be allowed for stability reasons.
