Sqn Training 07 or 08 02 21

Post by Danny »

Evening Guys,

I'm planning for a Sqn training night and would like as many as possible there.

Who is available, and what day is best?

Sunday 7th or Monday 8th?

OK guys I'm planning this in for Monday 08 02 21 at 2000.

Sorry if it doesn't fit with some of you but don't worry, it is in essence what you will cover on BFJT 5.

Danny I have some questions regarding Instrument training, and the profile described on BFJT pack. I copy it for ease of reference.
1) Fly runway heading, climb @5°+ to A2 (QFE)
2) Climbing right turn to heading 270 at A12+.
3) Intercept 270 radial for 44x (KUT) to DME0.
4) Intercept 225 radial for 67x (KOB) to DME10.
5) Intercept 180 radial for 16x (BAT) to DME0.
6) Intercept 01y. Head 090.
7) Intercept 090 radial for 22x (VAS).
8) At DME40 descend to A10 (QFE).
9) Intercept VAS DME arc at DME21.
10) Descend to A3 (QFE) while in DME arc.
11) Intercept runway 31 heading.
12) Perform ILS landing
Now I don't mean to be awkward but this routing is hard for me to follow.
Taking off runway 31, we turn right heading 270. Does that mean that we make a right turn, all the way around, making a 320 degree turn?
The radial reference seems to be the other way around. A radial originates at the centre (TACAN) and stretches outwards. Therefore KUT 270 radial is stretching towards the sea and not towards Vaziani, as far as I know.
Another issue is the reference to DME0. I read that as overflying the TACAN. If we fly over the TACAN at 12.000 feet, the DME should read 2NM (12.000feet = 1.97NM) over the station and not less.
Point 6 refers to "01Y". What is that? I couldn't find a TACAN with such a channel.

To me it would make more sense like this:
1) Fly runway heading, climb @5°+ to A2 (QFE)
2) Climbing left turn to heading 295 at A12+. (25 degree intercept to the radial)
3) Intercept 090 radial inbound for 44x (KUT) to KUT.
4) Intercept 045 radial inbound for 67x (KOB) to DME10.

ETC

What have I understood wrong?

Hi Grillman,

Thanks for the feedback, it really is much appreciated.

I found some errors with the original document and me and willo adjusted it, I forgot that the right turn was incorrect, thanks.

I’ll adjust the tacan radials, great info just what we need. The height point makes perfect sense.

I’m sure when I tested the mission the to/from flags were indicating correctly though, might have a fly and check unless you already have.

01Y is the tanker.

Again thanks for the feedback m8
