Training Syllabus

Post by Neil Willis »

To make F/a-18C training as effective as possible, we will detail a set of objectives and standards to be achieved in a progressive ladder of technical, tactical and skills.

As a Naval Squadron operating from carriers, phase one would logically be carrier ops. It will improve all-round piloting skills as well as setting a standard for launch and recovery to the carrier in all weathers using set procedures around the boat.

Next phase will be formation flying introducing tactical awareness and mutual protection by working closely as pairs.

In addition, employment of weapons will go through all weapons systems, range training, Air to Air combat techniques, Suppression of Enemy Air Defences , Combat Air Patrolling, Anti-ship warfare, Close Air Support, Deep Strike Missions etc.

Finally, we will practice emergency procedures, navigation, including time on target and other basic aircraft handling as well as radio and voice procedures and IFR and night flying.

The program to work towards these goals will be the subject of some discussion, but we hope to roll it out soon.

Carrier Qualification Phase:

1. Carry out 5 OK graded landings under VFR (Case I recovery) conditions. Carry out 1 deck launch using Case I procedures carrying out a clearing turn and departing on the BRC heading to 7 miles below 500 ft before leaving the pattern.

2. Carry out 1 OK graded landing under VFR (Case II recovery) conditions. Carry out 1 deck launch using Case III procedures carrying out a clearing turn and departing to the 10 mile arc on BRC at the correct speed and altitude, and departing onto a pre-determined radial.

3. Carry out 1 OK graded landing under IFR (Case III recovery) conditions.

4. Demonstrate good knowledge of carrier operations to include deck position nomenclature, Catapult procedures and nomenclature.

We will carry out a formal qualification session soon, when everyone is ready.
