Allied Fighters Fuel Consumption, for Mission planning.

Post by Black-Witch »

After testing in the ME, I recommend the following "rough" consumption rates for the Spitfire, Mosquito and Mustang IV for mission planning.

Unsurprisingly the Mosquito, with 2 Merlin's, uses about twice the fuel of the Spitfire, However, even on max cruise settings the Mustang not only has the longest legs but is still the fastest even at low level, laminar flow wing and all that jazz.

So, the Spitfire is a short range escort as it just has an hours duration and can cover around 260 miles at low level. Of course it could carry either of the 45 gallon drop-tanks which could extend the range by about 30 minutes.

The Mosquito, with only internal fuel, has a range/duration of around 790 miles/3 hours. Much more with up to 200 Gallons in wing tanks.

The Mustang has enough internal fuel for around 3 hours at low level and a range of 870 miles on max cruise settings but, the Pony is capable of much higher power settings for short periods when it will burn more fuel.
NOTE: The Mustang fuel tanks need constant managing, swapping between the 2 wing tanks.

Spitfire consumption
10lb/minute at 2850 rpm +9lb's @ 282 mph
9.5lb/minute at 2650 rpm +7 @ 273 mph

Mosquito consumption
20lb/minute at 2850 rpm +9lb's @ 273 mph
16.5 lb/minute at 2650 rpm +7lb's @ 263 mph

Mustang IV consumption
9.5lb's/minute at 2700 rpm 46 mmHg @ over 300 mph
8lb's/minute at 2700 rpm 36 "Hg @ 282 mph

I recommend the Mustang IV for escorting Mosquitos.

I think the use of the Jug at low level would be frowned upon, without air supremacy.

Also, I would have to learn how to use the turbo supercharger correctly!!

I'll give it a go soon though Chris

Cheers

Chris, regarding the P-47D, I took the -40 version up, and it was my first flight in a Jug so this is preliminary, but first impressions are that is a very nice module and it feels a nice plane to fly.
It is however a High altitude escort/interceptor and doesn't do too well low down.

Thunderbolt consumption.
16 lb's/minute @ 2550 rpm 42 "Hg around 285 mph.

Great, thanks for that mate, our figures are now complete. Yes, understand the Jugs capabilities but REDAIR apart, i.e. with theatre air superiority, it is an admirable ground attack airframe given the payload and power but more importantly the armoured cockpit give great security down low against DCS Ai which of course as we all know, are deadeye dicks,,,, in RL I think the 'thunderbolt' baton (name) was passed to that other great CAS plane, the A10..

Your highlights has made me look deeper into my aircraft stable and as XIX Squadrons missions can offer such a variety of AC with specific strengths, I now have to get better with the Pony and the Jug.... fun times ahead...
Kind Regards

A U.S. Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II from the Idaho Air National Guard’s 124th Fighter Wing is painted with a heritage WWII paint scheme at the Air National Guard paint facility in Sioux City, Iowa. The paint scheme is designed to replicate the look of the original P-47 Thunderbolt as it appeared during the 2nd World War. The 124th Fighter Wing conceived the idea in order to commemorate the unit’s 75th anniversary and lineage to their predecessor, the 405th Fighter Squadron.
