Mosquito Attack on enemy airfield.

Post by Black-Witch »

Sunday evening we ran our first low level attack against an enemy airfield in France.

We had 4 Mosquito's and 2 Spitfires available.

However, The first mission was an anti-shipping strike in the Channel, Bomb and cannon attacks were very effective against the enemy vessels, and just as the attack on the enemy ships was finishing we were alerted by Radar Controllers that x4 Ju88's were approaching Dover from the Calais area at around 3000', all 4 were shot down by both Spitfires and Mosquito's. who the=n pancacked at RAF Manston.

For the next sortie, all the aircraft refuelled and rearmed at RAF Manston and RAF High Haldon. We all met up, at low level, just off the French coast and took a low level cross country route avoiding known enemy FlaK positions, but we still lost aircraft en-route from the hazard of low flying, and after about 30-40 minutes we were on course to attack the Luftwaffe base at Merville-Calonne from its Eastern side.

A single pass was made over the airfield, bombing and shooting as we went, there were enemy fighters parked, some taxiing and even one Fw190 that was just taking off.

As we were travelling at around 270 mph at low level the enemy fighters were in disarray and were unable to follow us as we quickly went out of sight.

As we approached the French coast on the way home, we came over a slight ridge and in the distance, across the Channel, we could see the White Cliffs of Dover, a welcome sight indeed.

A great evenings flying with several enemy ships, bombers and fighters destroyed.

Good write up Lee. Enjoyed the low level formation flying, epic watching Neil loose concentration and dip his nose to low into an obstacle!
