Yes great write up. I'm glad to see CAW working well together. It will certainly give more options.

Luis, Hendon,
I fully understand fog of war. If we are to expect manpads or other threats to us in the A-10s, then we should always fly above them. If weather doesn't allow us to safely identify, and destroy unknown threats, we should not be authorised to fly. The Board of Enquiry after loosing a pilot and plane would make interesting reading.
Intel is key to mission success.
I'm away at the moment and didn't take part.
I would be disappointed if I spent hours planning a miz and brief, and had to eject from my A-10.

Good points Geoff. Intel is the key to mission success.

I just checked the check miz and there were SA-9s in some BMP groups. This intel was in the very first miz file and was in the subsequent ones.
Not all armoured groups had SA9's as defence, but I'd agree it would be very hard to spot them.

There was some breaks in the cloud so a timed attack could have been made. But the mission was meant to be a difficult one.

97 were only sent as the balloon had gone up and I'm afraid you were expendable.

As for the board of enquiry, after the decent into WWIII with the subsequent nuclear strikes, I'm afraid the 97 Sqn CO struggled to find the paperwork.

I cannot agree that man-pads should be notified in advance. They should always be anticipated, and the flight adjusted accordingly. They have a reach of around 8,000ft plus, and a range of up to 3 nm. On the plus side, they will normally be detectable by the defensive system, or, alternatively, when in doubt punch off some flares.

In essence, always assume they are there, and look out for the soldier standing around. It keeps us honest.

I'd have to agree with Alan, I'm pretty sure I get a bit lazy with the counter measures.
Looking at the news from Ukraine, it's something that's not forgotten too much in videos I've seen.
