Situation
Syrian rebels have been making gains in the north and east of the country. The regime is only still in place because of Russia's support. Russia is severely weakened by the war in Ukraine.
Appeals from the Syrian rebels have been answered and a force has been assembled to attack the vast military area around Damascus. The attacks are designed to seriously weaken the Syrian government forces.
Coalition action
The strikes will be conducted in the Air interdiction phase of battle
A coordinated attack will be made on Syrian airfields and armoured units in the Damascus area.
Syrian forcesBattle Phases
Air Interdiction.
Once Air superiority is achieved and Red Air has been pushed away from the AO, the low-level and
medium-level attacks begin. SWEEP/SEAD/Grnd Attack packages begin to attack support
infrastructure but there is still the risk of mobile SAM units that have survived. Low-level sorties to
attack bridges, railway yards, fuel storage, ammunition dumps, power stations and transformer
yards, supply routes, comms towers etc begin. Anything that degrades the enemy's ability to prolong
the conflict..
Syrian forces are on alert and are ready to defend themselves. See miz file for general defences, but assume that IR manpads are in the theatre.
After the catastrophic defeat in the Bekka valley 50 years ago Syria have trained their SAM units to Russian Doctrine and should be considered proficient.
PlanningThe Soviet doctrine of ambush attacks, SAM system mobility, clever use of emission control and decoys, camouflage of SAM sites, and the use of supporting electronic warfare assets was abandoned by the Syrians completely. Hurley’s summary of Syrian behaviour in the Winter 1989 issue of Air Power Journal is perhaps the best summary:
“Syrian SAM operators also invited disaster upon themselves. Their Soviet equipment was generally regarded as quite good; Syrian handling of it was appalling.
Please see miz file and Frag. The area of operation is compact. When flights have been added to the miz please check overlaps of flight plans and de-confliction of flights will be handled by radio calls.
Please return flights by Saturday 5th Nov.
