Its because the planes are quite far away and I'm not sure he's running much in the way of anti-aliasiing.

Are you sure thats not anistropic filtering thats 16x.

Antialiasing in dcs is handled via the MSAA (multisampling antialiasing) which goes to 4x or SSAA which goes to 2x (this is supersampling which basically renders the game at a higher res and then downscales it, big fps hit that one).

Antialiasing smooths out jaggies, anistropic filtering sharpens textures that are at extreme angles (ie runways when you are sat on them etc).
