Proposed WW2 mission

Post by Mr_Sukebe »

Chaps,

During last night’s mission, it was mentioned that it might be interesting to run a similar kind of mission, but for WW2.
As it happens, I have something that with a small amount of work could well potentially fit the bill.
I’m looking for some feedback on who might be interested.

The premise of the mission is a B17 strike into the Normandy area in 1943.
It could be run as either PVP or PVE.
The allies will have:
- The B17 bomber group to escort
- P51s
- Spitfires, both standard and clipped wing
The allied target is to ensure that as many of the bombers survive, with a secondary objective of downing enemy fighters. The target will be marked with a bullseye, such that you can ask your home base for directions if you get lost (bullseye can be queried with AWACs). Failing that, look for the contrails from the B17s.
Allied fighters will be based in southern England.

The Luftwaffe will have:
- 109s
- 190 A8s.
Neither the 190 Dora or MW50 will be available as neither fit the timeline. The 109 shouldn’t really be there, but by removing MW50, it approximates close enough to an earlier G6.
The Axis objective is to knock down as many bombers as possible, and disrupt the attack.
The Axis will have availability of 4 key airfields. Others on the map are for emergency landings only.
The Axis do NOT know where the bomber group will go, however their Freya system is capable to identifying the formation of the bomber group even over England, hence why startup can be fairly relaxed.

Both sides will have radar, as in reality the RAF had their home defence network, and the Germans were running Freya.
That will be simulated by the in game use of AWACs aircraft, which will be invisible and immortal.
All aircraft will be hot started such that you can re-join more easily.

My thoughts are to suggest running this on either a Tues or a Thurs at some point in the next 2-3 weeks.

If you’re interested, please advise if you’re interested and which aircraft you’d like to fly.
I can then balance with the sides with AI if required.

All valid points M. Let me suggest a different day then, say one Sunday evening at 19:00, and clearly this will only be for those who fancy a little WW2 dalliance.

We could add another night to embrace WW2 stuff too. Especially given the Mozzie is in the offing.

Quite happy for you to take the server space and run with it for an additional night.

You’re in for a culture shock - tail draggers eat inexperienced pilots for breakfast!

I did say alternative nights. Tuesdays and Thursdays are already allocated, definitely.

I am VERY interested in this. Definitely count me in please.

I have the Spitfire (most of my WW2 hours are on this but it still kills me when I don't pay attention), the P51 (only a few hours on this but I found it very easy to fly and operate) and the 109 (not flown at all but would learn it if it would help balance out the numbers).

I have Normandy and the WW2 assets pack.

For Jet-heads who fancy dabbling in WW2, I would say that the P51 is a lot more straightforward in regards getting around the aerodrome, taking off and landing. The Spitfire can be truly overwhelming and the engine management is a full time operation. The P51 has a wider range of armaments, a much nicer instrument panel and a rear facing radar (not that I've used it yet). I love the Spitfire and I'm committed to mastering it (one day) but if you just want to get in the air and join in a WW2 mission on the allies side, I'd say the P51 might be worthy of consideration.

Thanks for organising a WW2 mission, can't wait.

I've updated the opening post with interested pilots and their aircraft preference. Once we hit 10 or more, I'll start balancing the mission ready for use.
